This weather is certainly having us crave far-flung beaches and sunshine. But we shall not be discouraged. Bad weather just means we’re not feeling guilty for staying in and working on our careers, catching up on shows, and reading. We’ve got plenty for the latter in our READ section and have especially been enjoying the Emerging Arts Leaders Blog Salon by Americans for the Arts. If you do want to brave the rain these days, we have plenty of exciting events to GO to. And make sure that you save the date for our June 18 event “Job Hunting in the Arts” at Sotheby’s. Lastly APPLY for exciting opportunities we have for you by YPA members, NYFA, and more.

The first week of May has come and gone and with that, the annual wave of Frieze-related art fairs and activities. We hope you survived! This week we are focusing on improvement and starting with how to advocate for the arts and humanities-check out READ for that and more. For GO, head to the NY Historical Society for a vital #metoo oriented conversation on how museums and institutions can support women and their stories. APPLY has professional development opportunties for those in the dance community and Harlem, plus the usual job round-up. Another week, another chance to do just a little bit better. Onwards!

Some days we need little reminders about the power of the arts. This week we’ve been pouring over two reports that have provided that kind of reminding; one by Springboard for the Arts and the other by the British Council. Both beautifully capturing the importance of the arts and culture in reconciliation, community, and building resilience. They’re certainly worth a READ. We’re also hoping to see you at this week’s YPA tour of The Other Art Fair (free!) or we hope you enjoy some of the other events under GO. While preparing this Arts Weekly, we actually laughed out loud at the brilliant TED Talk by Shawn Achor (see below). Not only did it cause a profound re-thinking around the concepts of happiness and success, but it also made us grateful that we work in an industry where it’s easy to find passion and joy through our love of arts. No matter how difficult our industry can be. Another Read this week is looking at how we need to re-think arts management courses and what curriculum changes should happen.
